【講義概要】

The aim of this course is to introduce students to academic discussion. The focus will be on providing students with plenty of practice with the various skills involved in planning, preparing for and taking part in group and then solo discussion and speeches. The goal is to develop your argumentation and persuasion skills, analytical thinking, as well as spoken fluency. By reading current news articles, as well as related materials to generate ideas and evidence, the course will also broaden students’ awareness of current world events.

This course meets the following DP criteria: Diversity; see the world from a broader perspective (2) and express one's own opinion logically in an academic forum (3). This course meets the following CP criteria:
Evaluation of learning (1), students are assessed continuously on critical thinking, research methods.

The course is taught in English.

By the end of this course, students will: -
1- Have a broader awareness of current news
2- Be able to develop opinions, reasons, support their arguments
3- Express a range of ideas on current issues in world news



【履修上の注意】

Participation and attendance is important for students' final grades in this course. The class is conducted in English. Students will be actively learning with partners or groups and giving regular presentations to share their views.



【事前準備学習】

This course is designed for anyone with an interest in world affairs and improving their formal spoken English skills. It will expand upon skills already practiced in the earlier 日本文化研究　course with research and readings now focusing on the world outside Japan.
