講義概要

Comparative culture develops observational skills for the study of culture. Students "become the researcher" by observing an international homestay for the of linking culture and communication Opportunity arises to pinpoint the impact of cultural values on everyday behavior. In order to enhance observational skill, the conceptual challenge of beauty and culture is undertaken to advance critical thinking skill. From the basis of enhanced observation, cultural understanding of self and other, and critical thought, the last part of the course deals with comparative discourse--the study of
informational styles between English and Japanese. Overall the course aims for a full appreciation of the role of culture in everyday life by detecting and understanding the contextual features of communication both verbal and nonverbal and
how linked to cultural values, identity and beliefs.



【学習到達目標】

1 to define and identify cultural values as realized in observed behaviors; 2 to recognize biases in thought and explain their
significance; 3 to demonstrate a reasonable plan for linking culture and communication or considering cultures contrastively;



履修上の注意

University "class code" is enforced, so please be sure to honor it. In particular, cell phones are prohibited from use during class;
so having a electronic dictionary is recommended. Please note also that this syllabus is tentative and the instructor reserves right
to make changes.

No prerequisites 条件 other than being prepared for rigorous study and having a deep interest in culture and the world.
Without serious intention, then the student should go elsewhere; not here.
